A fast look at a comparison table of the light return of the different types of lamps tells us that led lighting without any doubt wins from incandescent and halogen lamps. If you compare led lighting with energy savers, we see some variation in the results. Quality led lighting gives us a higher light return than energy-savers. But nowadays the market is washed over with leds of inferior quality and those leds hardly get the return of energy-savers. And trying to replace fluo tubes by led lighting is not a good idea at all.

The vantages of led lighting are much wider than just the light return. When in the eighties the 12 volt halogen lamps became popular, for the first time we had a small light source. This made smaller light fixtures possible and because of the very tiny filament we got very nice light effects. Show your diamond ring under a halogen lamp and compare with the result under a energy saver and you will notice that a small light source is reflecting in a totally different way and puts alive your diamond.

We had to wait until the led lighting to be able to work again with small light sources but now with a light return even better than energy savers. A 1 watt powerled is smaller than 2x2mm and therefore giving us the same light effects as with 12 volt halogen lights. Unfortunately led lighting is really unreal white. By gluing a coloured top on the white led, the light colour is influenced to a more pleasing white. But this brings the light return down. At the end, the led lighting designers put a lens before the led giving us the possibility of different light beams. By putting together three of more of those powerleds in one lamp you get more power and more light.

Led lighting has another disadvantage. It is driven by an electronic component and electronics and heat are not friends. Especially with cheaper leds this can lead to problems. Not to loose the compactness of led lighting they are housed in a lamp housing the same size as halogen lamps. Therefore the electronics is placed very near to the led light source. Led lighting is having a higher return and returns more light and less heat, nevertheless led lighting can also become really hot. Place such a led lamp in a closed spot, near to a high and hot ceiling and you can get problems with the life span loosing a part of your high investment.

But at the end those are all growing pains. Led lighting has much more advantages than disadvantages and the research is enormous. The break through of led led lighting is unstoppable.
